6.7L Power Stroke — No-Start Diagnostic (Cranks vs. Doesn’t Crank)

A 6.7L Power Stroke that won't start splits into two big diagnostic paths — cranks but won't fire, or doesn't crank at all. Each path has different common causes. Here's how we work through it.

What this issue is

A 6.7L Power Stroke that won’t start can mean many different things, and the first diagnostic question is the most important one: does the engine crank but not fire, or does it not crank at all? These two scenarios have different common causes and follow different diagnostic paths.

Symptoms you’ll notice

  • Engine cranks but won’t fire — the most common no-start scenario. Engine spins normally with the starter, but doesn’t catch and run
  • Engine doesn’t crank or cranks slowly — different scenario, electrical-side root cause
  • Starts, runs briefly, then dies — the truck fires and runs for a few seconds before stalling
  • Cold-start hard, warm-start fine — temperature-dependent, usually glow plug system related
  • Hard start that gradually became no-start — progressive failure over weeks or months
  • Multiple electrical things acting up alongside the no-start — broader electrical system issue

The detail you can give us about which of these patterns you’re seeing dramatically speeds up the diagnostic.

Cranks-but-won’t-fire diagnostic

Three primary causes, in the order we work through them:

1. Fuel system issues. No fuel pressure at the rail = no fire. We check:

  • Fuel filter condition and recent service history — clogged filter or air in the system from incomplete prime after recent service
  • Water-in-fuel sensor status — water contamination affects pressure and combustion
  • Fuel rail pressure during cranking — using the factory scan tool, we monitor what pressure the rail is actually building. Low or no pressure points at supply-side issues, CP4 pump failure, or fuel pressure regulator problems
  • Fuel sample for metallic debris — a CP4 in failure progress sheds metal into the fuel system. Metal in the sample = full fuel system conversation (see our 6.7L CP4 Pump Failure article and DCR Conversion service)

2. Glow plug system on cold-start. Diesel engines need adequate combustion chamber temperature to fire. The glow plug system warms the chambers during cold start. When glow plugs are failing or the glow plug control module is having issues, cold-start can be hard or impossible while warm-start works fine. 3. Electrical or sensor issues preventing ECM commands. Less common, but possible. A failed crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, or other critical sensor can prevent the ECM from issuing the injection commands needed for combustion. Stored codes typically point at these.

Doesn’t-crank-at-all diagnostic

Different path, electrical-side primary causes:

1. Battery condition. The 6.7L Power Stroke runs two batteries in parallel. Either one being bad can cause no-crank or slow-crank. We test both batteries under load (a quick voltage check at rest doesn’t tell the full story). If one battery is significantly weaker than the other, we typically replace both — mixed-age batteries cause ongoing electrical problems.

2. Battery cable corrosion or bad ground connections. Loose, corroded, or undersized battery cables prevent the starter from getting full current. Visual inspection plus a voltage drop test across the connections identifies this.

3. Starter motor failure. Less common than battery issues, but real. Starter solenoid clicks but motor doesn’t engage, or starter draws excessive current, or starter has internal failure.

4. Ignition switch or push-button start failure. The truck doesn’t see the start command from the driver. Diagnostic via direct testing at the switch.

5. Anti-theft / immobilizer system fault. The truck’s anti-theft system is preventing the engine from starting. Usually accompanied by a security indicator on the dash, sometimes an immobilizer code via the scan tool.

6. PCM or BCM issue. Less common, but failed power-train control module or body control module can prevent crank command from reaching the starter. Diagnostic via factory scan tool.

How we diagnose it

Sequence:

  1. Confirm the symptom precisely with the customer. Cranks vs. doesn’t crank? Cold vs. warm? After what events (recent service, sat for a long time, gradual progression)?

  2. Pull all stored codes with the factory scan tool. Specific codes narrow the diagnostic considerably.

  3. Battery and electrical test — load test both batteries, voltage drop across cables, alternator output check.

  4. For cranks-but-won’t-fire scenarios — fuel system pressure check during cranking, fuel sample inspection, glow plug system status, sensor data review.

  5. For doesn’t-crank scenarios — starter circuit testing, ignition switch test, immobilizer check.

  6. Process of elimination for less-common causes once primary causes are ruled out.

What the repair looks like

Repair scope spans an enormous range:

Battery replacement — most common no-crank fix. Both batteries replaced together with quality OEM-spec or quality aftermarket (we install Interstate or AC Delco typically).

Starter replacement — moderate scope, typically half-day.

Fuel filter service + bleed — for cranks-but-won’t-fire from fuel-side issue. Common simple fix when the problem is recent fuel service done without proper prime.

Glow plug or glow plug control module replacement — see our P0670 article for scope.

Sensor replacement (crank position, cam position, etc.) — moderate scope when diagnostic identifies a specific failed sensor.

Full fuel system replacement / DCR conversion — when CP4 failure is the underlying cause. See DCR Conversion service.

Cranks-but-won't-fire is the more common no-start scenario on the 6.7L Power Stroke. Three primary causes we work through. First, fuel-side issues — no fuel pressure, contaminated fuel, CP4 pump failure, or fuel system priming issues after recent service. My truck won't crank at all — different problem? +

Yes — cranks-vs-doesn't-crank is the first major fork in the diagnostic. Doesn't-crank usually means electrical — dead or weak batteries (the 6.7L runs two batteries; either one being bad can cause no-crank), bad starter, bad ignition switch, immobilizer issue, or a body control module fault. We start with battery testing under load, then progress through the starter circuit if batteries check out.

Cold-start hard, warm-start fine — what's that? +

Classic glow plug system symptom. The glow plugs heat the combustion chambers to help with cold ignition. When glow plugs are failing or the glow plug control module is having issues (P0670 codes), the truck struggles to fire on cold mornings but starts fine once the engine and ambient temp are warmer. I just had work done and now it won't start — what happened? +

Common scenario, several possibilities. If the work was fuel-side (filter change, anything fuel-related), the system probably needs proper bleed/prime. If batteries were disconnected, BCM relearning cycles or anti-theft system reset may be needed. If significant work was done, a connector or harness may not have been fully seated on reinstall. If you've had work done elsewhere recently and the truck won't start now, bring it to us — we'll figure out what's missing without the back-and-forth of going back to the original shop.

Could it be the CP4 pump? +
