DCR conversion is the answer to one of the worst-case scenarios on a 6.7L Power Stroke — a failed CP4 pump that takes the entire fuel system with it. The conversion swaps the failure-prone CP4 for the far more durable Stanadyne DCR (Diesel Common Rail) pump, and when it’s installed correctly, it eliminates the CP4 failure mode entirely.

Why the CP4 fails (and why the conversion solves it)
The CP4 pump from Bosch is what drives the 6.7L Power Stroke’s high-pressure fuel system, capable of generating up to 32,000 PSI at the rail. That performance comes with a tradeoff: the CP4 is sensitive to fuel quality, and when it fails, it sends metal shavings through the entire fuel system — injectors, lines, sensors, the works.

DCR conversion replaces the CP4 with the Stanadyne DCR (Diesel Common Rail) pump — a fundamentally tougher design (eccentric drive, pressure-lubricated cam and bushings, forged-steel case) engineered to tolerate the low-lubricity US diesel that kills the CP4. It matches the CP4.2’s output curve, so no tuning changes are required, and it actually delivers more fuel capacity than stock. It’s a plug-and-play replacement with OE fit, and it’s emissions-compliant.
Why we replace the driver-side fuel rail at 80k+ miles
The driver-side fuel rail is a major component in how the DCR system regulates pressure. Three things it does:
- Supplies fuel to the driver-side injectors
- Feeds the passenger-side rail and injectors
- Regulates the entire system’s pressure via the PCV (pressure control valve) at the rear of the rail
When we remove these valves, we routinely find debris or microscopic metal strands restricting fuel flow — particles far smaller than what’s typically found inside the CP4 pump’s VCV. If that debris stays in the rail after we install your new DCR system, you’re starting the conversion with restriction already built in. The new pump can’t deliver its full performance, and you may end up chasing pressure issues that the conversion was supposed to solve.
For trucks at 80,000+ miles, we strongly recommend replacing the driver-side fuel rail during the DCR install. We’re already in that area of the engine — the labor overlap means doing it now is significantly less work than coming back to do it separately later. A clean, new rail ensures consistent power delivery, smoother idle, and better overall reliability.

The crankcase ventilation system is a well-known trouble spot on 6.7L Power Strokes. Excessive oil vapor buildup contributes to:
