6.7L Power Stroke — Upper Radiator Hose Leak (2011+ F-Series)

Coolant on the ground under your 2011+ Super Duty? Nine times out of ten on the 6.7L Power Stroke, it's the upper radiator hose connection — and it's one of the simplest fixes on this platform. Sometimes a single O-ring solves the whole problem.

What this issue is

If you’re seeing coolant on the ground under the front of your 2011 or newer F-Series Super Duty with the 6.7L Power Stroke, the most likely culprit is the upper radiator hose connection — specifically the O-ring at the 90-degree fitting where the hose meets the thermostat housing on top of the engine.

It’s a known weak point on this platform. The O-ring is a rubber seal that lives in a thermal cycling environment with constant pressure changes, and after enough years and miles, it gets brittle, takes a set, and starts weeping coolant.

The good news: it’s one of the simplest repairs on the entire platform. The labor — even at a shop — is under an hour for a straightforward replacement.

Symptoms you’ll notice

  • Coolant on the ground under the front of the engine, especially after the truck has sat overnight or after a drive
  • Wet film or crusty residue on the 90-degree fitting on top of the engine, driver side. Shine a light down on it; you’ll see it.
  • Slowly dropping coolant level in the reservoir. The cooling system is sealed when working correctly — coolant doesn’t disappear without going somewhere.
  • Sweet smell from the engine bay — coolant has a distinctive odor that’s hard to miss once you know it
  • Coolant low warning on the dash if the leak has progressed and you haven’t been topping off

The leak typically starts as a slow weep that worsens over time. If you catch it when it’s still a small drip, the fix is simple. If it progresses to a major loss event, the truck can overheat — at which point the radiator hose leak becomes the secondary problem, and the overheat consequences (head gasket stress, water pump damage) become the primary one.

Why it happens

The upper radiator hose runs from the top of the radiator on the driver’s side back to the thermostat housing on top of the engine, with a 90-degree fitting at the engine end. The connection at the thermostat housing uses an O-ring seal held in place by a metal retainer clip.

That O-ring is a rubber compound rated for engine coolant exposure and the temperature range of the cooling system. But “rated for” doesn’t mean “lasts forever.” Over years of:

  • Thermal cycling (cold to operating temperature, repeated thousands of times)
  • Pressure cycling (cooling system pressure fluctuates with thermal load)
  • Coolant exposure (the chemistry of even OEM coolant degrades over time and can affect rubber seals)

…the O-ring loses elasticity, takes a permanent set in the shape of the groove, and starts allowing coolant to weep past it. Once the leak starts, it tends to get worse — coolant flow over the seal accelerates the degradation.

This isn’t a defect or a recall issue. It’s a wear item. Most 2011+ Super Duty trucks will see this O-ring need replacement at some point.

How we diagnose it

Quick visual confirmation is usually all that’s needed:

  1. Visual inspection of the 90-degree fitting on top of the engine where the upper radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing. Coolant residue, wet film, or visible drips at that connection are the smoking gun.

  2. Cooling system pressure test to confirm. Pressurize the cooling system to 15 PSI (rated maximum) and watch the connection. If the leak is at the O-ring, you’ll see active weeping under pressure. This also rules out other leak sources further down the system.

  3. Coolant level history check with the owner. If the truck has been losing coolant slowly with no obvious external leak, and the only wet spot you can find is at the upper radiator hose fitting, that’s almost certainly the entire problem.

If the visual is clean at the upper hose but the truck is still losing coolant, look elsewhere — water pump, lower hose, EGR cooler, or in worse cases head gasket. But on this platform, upper hose leak is the first place to check because it’s the most common.

What the repair looks like

O-ring-only repair (the simple path):

  1. Drain the cooling system enough to drop coolant level below the upper hose
  2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to slide the metal retaining clip on the thermostat housing side outward toward the EGR cooler until it’s free
  3. Pull upward on the retaining clip at the radiator side
  4. Lift the hose off both connections
  5. Use a small flat-head screwdriver or a 90-degree pick tool to extract the old O-ring from the thermostat housing socket
  6. Inspect the socket for any debris or scoring; clean with a lint-free cloth
  7. Install the new Ford OEM O-ring, lubricated with a small amount of fresh coolant
  8. Reseat the hose at both ends; slide the metal retainer clips back into their grooves until you hear them click into place
  9. Refill the cooling system with a quality red coolant rated for all diesel applications
  10. Bleed the system per Ford procedure (engine running, heater on max heat, top off as air purges)

Full hose replacement (when the hose itself is suspect):

Same procedure, but install a complete new hose assembly instead of just replacing the O-ring. We recommend Ford OEM for long-term reliability — aftermarket hoses sometimes have minor dimensional differences at the retainer clip area that can cause a less-secure fit.

How do I know it's the upper radiator hose and not something worse? +

Look at the big radiator hose on the driver's side — it runs from the top of the radiator to the thermostat housing on the driver-middle of the engine. There's a 90-degree fitting on top of the engine where the hose connects. Shine a light on that fitting and look for residue, crusty coolant deposits, or a wet film. That's almost always where the leak is on this platform. If you see drips at that fitting and not anywhere else, you've found it.

Can I just replace the O-ring instead of the whole hose? +

Yes, and this is the simplest fix. Buy a new O-ring from Ford. Use a flat-head screwdriver to slide the metal retaining clip out of its groove (toward the EGR cooler on the thermostat housing side) and pull upward on the radiator-side clip. Pull the hose off. Use a small screwdriver or 90-degree pick tool to remove the old O-ring at the thermostat-housing end. Drop the new O-ring in, slide the hose back onto both connections, and slide the retaining clips back into place. You'll hear a click when each end is properly seated. Refill with Ford OEM coolant and bleed the system.

When should I just replace the whole hose instead? +

If the hose itself shows cracking, swelling, brittleness, or visible wear, replace the whole assembly. Replacement hoses are available from Ford, O'Reilly, AutoZone, or any reputable parts supplier. The work is the same as the O-ring fix but with a new hose dropped in instead of just the O-ring. We'd recommend Ford OEM hose if you're keeping the truck long-term — the aftermarket hoses sometimes have fitment issues at the retainer clips that an OEM hose doesn't.
