The fix is straightforward but the consequences of ignoring it are dramatic: the truck progressively derates from full power to 50 MPH to 5 MPH on a defined schedule.
The cause is almost always cold weather exposing a heater that’s been quietly broken for months. We see a predictable spike of these in late fall and early winter as temperatures drop into the range that activates the heater for the first time since the previous spring.
Symptoms you’ll notice
- Check Engine Light with P20BA — sometimes paired with other DEF system codes
- Reduced power or limp mode triggered when the truck attempts to use the DEF heater and can’t
- Speed limited to 50 MPH after 100 miles of continued driving on the code

Why it happens
The DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) used in the 6.7L Power Stroke after-treatment system is 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% urea. Pure DEF freezes at approximately 12°F. To prevent freezing, the truck has a heater built into the DEF tank assembly that activates when DEF temperature drops below approximately 35°F.
When the heater fails:
- In warm weather, the failure goes unnoticed because the heater isn’t being activated.
- The first time temperatures drop below 35°F, the ECM commands the heater on and monitors feedback.
- The feedback doesn’t come back correctly — the ECM can’t verify the heater is functioning.
- P20BA sets and the dash CEL illuminates.
- The truck enters reduced power mode to limit fuel consumption while the issue is being addressed.
- At 100 miles of continued driving, the speed limit drops to 50 MPH.
- At the next engine start past the 100-mile mark, the speed limit drops to 5 MPH.
The 5-MPH limit isn’t a metaphor — it’s literally 5 MPH, intended to make the truck functional only for moving it onto a tow truck or into a shop bay. Don’t get caught past 100 miles without a plan.
The most common single cause is failure of the DEF tank heater assembly itself — the heating element fails, or the integrated wiring within the assembly degrades. Less common but real: the harness between the DEF tank and the GPM (Glow Plug Module) can develop broken wires, bad grounds, or corroded connectors that produce the same code symptoms.
How we diagnose it
Sequence we run:

Confirm the code and read freeze-frame data. P20BA alone with no other DEF system codes points strongly at the heater itself or its immediate wiring. P20BA paired with other codes (DEF pump, DEF injector, DEF level sensor) suggests a wider system issue worth investigating before throwing parts at the heater.

Visual inspection of the DEF tank assembly. Look for damaged wiring, corrosion at the tank-side connector, leaked DEF (white crystalline deposits — DEF residue), or any obvious physical damage. DEF crystallization on or near the heater connector is a tell.

Multimeter testing of the heater circuit. With the connector unplugged, measure resistance across the heater terminals. Spec varies by year — we look it up against the FSM for the specific year. Out-of-spec resistance = bad heater. Open circuit = either bad heater or broken wire inside the harness.

Harness continuity test from the DEF tank to the GPM. Disconnect both ends and test pin-to-pin for continuity. Any pin showing open circuit or high resistance points at a harness fault rather than the heater itself.

Power and ground verification at the GPM side. With the truck running and the heater commanded on, verify the GPM is actually delivering power to the heater circuit. If the GPM isn’t sending the command, the issue is upstream of both the harness and the heater.
This sequence rules out the harness and the GPM before committing to a full DEF tank heater assembly replacement, which is by far the most involved single component in the diagnosis chain.
What the repair looks like
Most jobs end with a DEF tank heater assembly replacement. The work itself:
- Pressure-wash the DEF tank area first. This is critical — any dirt or debris that gets into the tank during the repair will clog the DEF injector or the DEF pump downstream, creating a much bigger problem than the one being fixed.
- Drain the DEF tank to a level below the heater assembly access.
- Disconnect electrical connectors carefully. The DEF pump injector nipple is fragile — if it breaks, the entire pump assembly needs replacement on top of the heater work.
- Mark fill and return line positions before disconnecting them. They need to go back exactly where they came off, with no kinks at the bend points or over the frame rail.
- The large gray plug is a sea-saw clip in a bad location. Pry up on the retainer with a straight pick rather than pushing on the opposite end.
- Remove the failed heater assembly.
- Install the new heater assembly with proper torque on all fasteners and clean connections at every connector.
- Reconnect lines in their marked positions.
- Refill the DEF tank with fresh DEF.
