P0700 on the 6.7L Power Stroke isn't a transmission failure code itself — it's the TCM telling the ECM there's another transmission code stored that needs attention. Here's how we work through what the actual underlying issue is.
What this issue is
P0700 is the OBD-II diagnostic code for “Transmission Control System (MIL Request)” — and it’s not a failure code in itself. P0700 is the TCM (Transmission Control Module) telling the ECM (Engine Control Module) that the TCM has detected another transmission code and is requesting the Check Engine Light be illuminated to alert the driver.
In other words: P0700 is the headline. The actual story is whatever other transmission code is stored alongside it.
The diagnostic isn’t “fix P0700”; it’s “pull the full code set and figure out what the TCM actually has to say.” That’s why P0700 by itself can be associated with anything from a software update need to a major transmission rebuild — depending on what the underlying code turns out to be.
What transmission you have
Two main transmissions across the 6.7L Power Stroke production run:
- 2011–2019 trucks: Ford 6R140 TorqShift — 6-speed automatic, heavy-duty design for the 6.7L’s torque output
- 2020+ trucks: Ford 10R140 TorqShift — heavy-duty 10-speed automatic (distinct from the F-150’s 10R80), introduced for MY2020 with some MY2020 production possibly carrying over the 6R140 in specific configurations during the transition
Both are robust transmissions but each has its own characteristic failure modes and service patterns. P0700 can appear on either.
Symptoms you’ll notice
P0700 itself just illuminates the Check Engine Light. The real symptoms come from whatever underlying issue the TCM is responding to:
- Check Engine Light with P0700 — the trigger code
- Other transmission-specific codes also stored — typically P07XX (transmission), P08XX (transmission gearbox), or U-series (network communication) codes
- Harsh or delayed shifts — shifts that should be smooth become abrupt
- Slipping under load — towing or hill climbing reveals slippage
- Limp mode — the TCM may lock the transmission into 2nd or 3rd gear only to prevent further damage
- RPM spike during shifts — engine RPM climbs during gear changes when it shouldn’t
- Possible fluid leak — separate from P0700 but worth checking when transmission codes are present
If you’re seeing transmission-side symptoms with the CEL on, P0700 is likely the trigger code with one or more other codes underneath telling the actual story.
Why it happens
P0700 specifically just means the TCM is requesting MIL illumination. The reasons it would do that span the full range of possible transmission issues:
1. Software-side issues. Sometimes a Ford TCM software update is needed to resolve shift quality or shift timing issues that throw codes. A flash update from current software fixes these without physical repair.
2. Solenoid pack or valve body issues. The TCM controls shift timing through solenoids in the valve body. Solenoid wear, contamination, or electrical issues throw codes that trigger P0700.
3. Internal transmission wear. Clutch packs, planetary gears, or hard parts wearing out generate codes related to gear ratio errors, slip detection, or pressure issues.
4. Torque converter issues. Failed torque converter clutch (lockup issues), excessive slip, or shudder all generate codes the TCM responds to.
5. Sensor failures. Transmission speed sensors, temperature sensors, or pressure sensors that fail send out-of-spec data that the TCM interprets as a problem.
6. Network communication issues. U-series codes related to communication between the TCM and other modules (PCM, BCM) can trigger P0700.
7. Wiring or connector issues. Damaged wiring or corroded connectors at the TCM or transmission can produce intermittent codes that trigger P0700.
How we diagnose it
Sequence we use:

Pull all stored codes from all modules — not just powertrain codes. TCM-specific codes that paired with P0700 are essential to the diagnostic.

Read TCM software level and check against current Ford-released software. If the truck is multiple revisions behind, a flash may resolve the issue.

Read freeze-frame data on the underlying codes — what conditions were present when the code(s) set, what gear the truck was in, transmission temperature, etc.

Check transmission fluid level and condition. Burnt smell, dark color, contamination, or low level all flag specific issues.

Live data scan during a road test (when possible). Monitor gear position, line pressure, transmission temperature, torque converter slip, and any other relevant data to reproduce the symptom and identify root cause.

Pan drop and inspection if symptoms or fluid condition warrant. Clutch material, metal debris, or other contamination indicates internal failure.

Pressure test when needed to verify the transmission’s hydraulic system is producing target pressures.
By the end of this sequence, the underlying code is identified and we can quote the specific repair.
What the repair looks like
Wide range depending on root cause:
TCM software update (flash) — simplest scope. Truck stays in the bay, TCM is reflashed with current Ford software, codes cleared, road tested. Sometimes resolves the entire issue.
Solenoid pack replacement — moderate scope. Pull pan, replace solenoid pack, fresh fluid and filter, road test.
Valve body rebuild or replacement — moderate to major scope.
Torque converter replacement — major scope. Transmission has to come out.
Internal transmission rebuild or replacement — when teardown reveals widespread wear. The 6R140 and 10R140 are both rebuildable, but for trucks with significant internal damage, replacement (with a quality reman or built unit) is sometimes the better path.
Sensor replacement — single-component scope.
Wiring or connector repair — variable scope depending on what’s involved.
