P0420, P2463, and P24A0 on the LML Duramax all trace back to the same component — the hydrocarbon injector, also called the 9th injector, that sprays fuel into the exhaust stream during regen. Here's how we diagnose whether it's the HCI itself, a thermostat issue keeping the truck out of regen, or something else.

What this issue is

P0420, P2463, and P24A0 on the LML Duramax all share a common root: something is wrong with the regeneration system that keeps the diesel particulate filter (DPF) clean. The hydrocarbon injector — the HCI, also called the 9th injector — is the component that sprays diesel into the exhaust to raise temperature for regen. When it fails or when the supporting systems don’t deliver the truck to regen-capable conditions, these codes set.

The diagnostic split is what matters here:

  1. HCI itself failed — the injector won’t spray, or sprays incorrectly
  2. Thermostat failure keeping the engine below regen temperature — looks like HCI failure on the codes, isn’t actually the HCI
  3. Other regen-supporting system failure — temperature sensors, DPF differential pressure sensor, or related

We see plenty of LML owners come into the shop assuming the HCI is bad when the actual root cause is a thermostat that’s been failing for months without anyone noticing. The diagnostic sequence below catches both.

Symptoms you’ll notice

  • Check Engine Light with P0420, P2463, or P24A0 — sometimes one, sometimes a combination
  • Frequent failed regen attempts — dash may show “regen in progress” repeatedly without completing
  • DPF status indicating regen needed more often than normal
  • Reduced fuel economy — incomplete regens waste fuel without delivering the soot-clearing benefit
  • Engine not reaching operating temperature consistently — coolant temp gauge sits low or fluctuates more than it should
  • Limp mode after repeated regen failures, with the ECM derating power to protect the after-treatment system

The cold-running symptom is the tell that the issue might be thermostat-side rather than HCI-side. If the truck takes a long time to reach operating temperature or never quite gets there, run the thermostat test before swapping the HCI.

Why it happens

HCI failure is real and common on this platform. The 9th injector lives in the hot, sooty environment of the exhaust stream, and over time the injector tip can clog with carbon deposits, the internal seals can fail, or the injector itself can stop responding to electrical commands. When the HCI can’t spray diesel into the exhaust during a commanded regen, regen fails and the codes set.

Thermostat failure is what we catch frequently. The LML thermostat is a wear part that doesn’t get replaced often, and partial failures (thermostat stuck slightly open, never letting coolant temperature climb to where the ECM wants it for regen) can persist for thousands of miles without the owner noticing. The dash gauge may not show an obvious cold reading because the gauge dampens fluctuations. The ECM, however, knows exact coolant temperature, and if it’s below the regen threshold, the regen cycle won’t initiate — same code symptoms as a bad HCI.

Other regen-supporting failures are less common but worth ruling out. The DPF differential pressure sensor, the EGT (exhaust gas temperature) sensors, and the DPF itself can all degrade in ways that prevent successful regen.

How we diagnose it

Sequence we use, prioritizing simple-and-common before involved:

  1. Engine and oil temperature verification. Bring the truck to running operating temperature (let it idle or drive it). Confirm via the scan tool — not the dash gauge — that coolant and oil temperatures are at or above 180°F. If either is below that threshold, the regen system can’t initiate. Move to thermostat test before going any further.

  2. Thermostat test (if temps don’t reach spec). Verify thermostat opening behavior. A stuck-open or partially failed thermostat is replaced and the truck retested. Often this alone resolves the codes without ever touching the HCI.

  3. Manual regen command via scan tool. With temperatures verified at spec, command a manual regeneration and let it run for approximately 5 minutes. Monitor EGT 1 and EGT 2:
    EGT 1 should rise above 600°F
    EGT 2 should rise above 1000°F

If both EGTs climb to spec, regen is working — the codes may have been historical or there’s a different intermittent issue to chase. If EGTs don’t climb, regen is failing, and we move to direct HCI testing.

  1. HCI bench test. Remove the HCI from the exhaust. With the truck running, energize the HCI via the scan tool. You should see diesel spraying from the injector tip. If no diesel sprays, the HCI itself has failed and needs replacement. Eye protection, and don’t get the spray pattern on your skin or clothes.

  2. DPF condition assessment. If the HCI is functional and EGTs reach spec but regens still fail, the DPF itself may be too loaded or damaged to complete a regen cycle. Differential pressure across the DPF is the diagnostic — high differential means restricted, and the DPF either needs cleaning service or replacement.

What the repair looks like

Thermostat replacement is the simplest path when the diagnostic identifies it. Standard cooling system service — drain, replace thermostat and gasket, refill, bleed, retest. Half a day in the shop.

HCI replacement is moderate scope. The injector comes out of the exhaust, the new one (we recommend OEM AC Delco or equivalent quality) goes in with new seals, and the ECM is recalibrated for the new injector. The work itself isn’t complex but access can be tight depending on aftermarket components on the truck.

DPF service or replacement is the most involved repair in this diagnostic family. DPF cleaning by a specialty service can sometimes restore function. DPF replacement is a major repair — these are emissions-system parts and the OEM units are premium parts. We talk through the options before committing to that path.

The hydrocarbon injector — also called the HCI or "9th injector" — is a fuel injector that sprays diesel directly into the exhaust stream during regen cycles. The 8 cylinder injectors handle combustion in the engine; the 9th injector handles regen in the exhaust. Why does my LML need to be at operating temperature for regen? +

The regen cycle requires the engine and exhaust to be hot enough that the additional fuel from the 9th injector can ignite cleanly and raise DPF temperature into the active regen range. The truck won't enter regen mode if coolant and oil temperatures are below approximately 180°F. On a lot of LML trucks we see in the shop, the underlying issue is a failed thermostat that prevents the engine from reaching operating temperature on its own — owners don't always notice because the dash gauge can sit reasonably close to normal even with a partially-stuck thermostat.

How do you test the HCI to confirm it's bad? +

We start with engine and oil temperature confirmation — both need to be at or above 180°F. With the truck running and at temp, command a manual regeneration via the scan tool. After about 5 minutes, EGT 1 should rise above 600°F and EGT 2 should rise above 1000°F. If those temperatures don't climb, the regen cycle isn't working. To isolate the HCI specifically, we remove the HCI from the exhaust, energize it via the scan tool with the truck running, and watch for diesel spray. If no diesel comes out, the HCI has failed and needs replacement.

Could it be the thermostat instead of the HCI? +

Yes, and this is one of the most common things we catch on LML trucks. A failed or partially failed thermostat keeps the engine from reaching the temperature required for regen. The truck throws codes that look like HCI failure when the actual problem is the thermostat. Always check thermostat function and verify the engine is actually reaching operating temperature before swapping the HCI — saves a lot of money on parts that wouldn't have fixed the problem.

Will the truck go into limp mode if I ignore these codes? +

Eventually, yes. The LML ECM tracks failed regen attempts. After enough failed regens, the DPF will be too soot-loaded to clear without a forced regen at a shop, and the ECM may derate engine power significantly to protect the after-treatment system. Driving on these codes for an extended period can also damage the DPF itself, turning an HCI replacement into a much costlier DPF replacement.
