TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) failures on Dodge/Ram trucks cause some of the most frustrating electrical problems we see — no-start, fuel pump weirdness, dead batteries, lights operating on their own. Three repair paths to consider.
What this issue is
The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) is the central fuse-and-relay box that controls most electrical systems in Dodge/Ram trucks from approximately 2007 onward. Fuel pump power, ignition, lighting, wipers, door locks, gauges, horn, HVAC controls — most of these route through the TIPM. When the TIPM fails — and they do, more often than they should — you get electrical faults that often look completely unrelated to each other but actually share the same root cause.
TIPM failures are some of the most frustrating diagnostic situations we see. The symptoms are intermittent, the failure modes are varied, and sometimes the truck runs fine in the shop while the customer was reporting clear problems an hour earlier. We have a sequence we follow that works most of the time, but TIPM diagnosis often requires some patience.
For owners of these trucks, knowing what TIPM failure looks like is the most useful thing — once you know it’s a TIPM issue, the repair conversation gets a lot more focused.
Symptoms you’ll notice
TIPM failures can manifest in a wide range of electrical symptoms, often clustered together but sometimes appearing one at a time:
- Intermittent no-start — engine cranks but won’t fire (typically a fuel pump relay issue), or won’t crank at all (other relay or power issue)
- Fuel pump running with the key off — TIPM fuel pump relay welded closed, leaves the pump running and drains the battery
- Fuel pump not running with the key on — relay welded open, no fuel delivery, no-start
- Random dead battery overnight — TIPM allowing parasitic drain on a circuit that should be off
- Wipers, lights, or horn operating on their own — relay or driver circuit failure inside the TIPM
- Gauges fluctuating or going dead — TIPM-controlled instrument cluster power issues
- Door locks cycling unexpectedly — body control function gone wrong
- Stalling at speed — momentary TIPM glitch interrupting fuel pump or ignition power
- Multiple unrelated-seeming faults clustered together — the most distinctive TIPM signature
If you’re seeing several of these symptoms together, the TIPM is the highest-probability cause.
Why it happens
The TIPM is essentially a complex circuit board with integrated relays in a sealed plastic enclosure. Several things can fail:
1. Internal relay failure. The fuel pump relay is the most famously problematic — it can weld closed (relay sticks “on”, fuel pump runs continuously) or weld open (relay stuck “off”, no fuel pump). Other internal relays can fail similarly. Chrysler issued multiple recalls and a class-action settlement primarily focused on fuel pump relay TIPM failures.
2. Solder joint failures. The TIPM circuit board has a lot of solder joints, and over time some can develop micro-cracks from thermal cycling, vibration, or moisture exposure. Cracked joints cause intermittent connectivity — exactly the kind of “sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t” symptom that’s so frustrating to diagnose.
3. Internal driver circuit failures. The TIPM controls many circuits via internal driver transistors that can fail. When a driver fails, the circuit it controls behaves erratically or stops working.
4. Moisture intrusion. The TIPM is mounted in the engine bay where it sees temperature swings, vibration, and occasional moisture exposure. Over time, the seal can degrade and moisture can enter the TIPM enclosure, corroding internal connections.
5. Software issues. Some TIPM behaviors are controlled by software updates. In rare cases, a TIPM firmware update from the dealer (sometimes called a “flash”) can resolve symptoms without hardware replacement — though by the time most owners arrive at the shop, hardware failure is usually the real cause.
How we diagnose it
TIPM diagnosis is part-systematic, part-intuition. Sequence we use:

Pull all stored codes — body codes, powertrain codes, network codes. TIPM-related codes can appear in multiple modules.

Verify the symptom pattern — talk to the customer in detail about when and how the symptoms occur. Is it cold-start specific? Hot weather? Bumpy roads? Time of day? Pattern data narrows the diagnostic significantly.

Check voltage and continuity at the TIPM connections with the truck in various states (key off, key on, engine running, accessory mode). Variations from spec point at specific TIPM circuits.

Listen for the fuel pump relay click cycle when the key is turned to “run” position. The relay should click on, run for a couple of seconds, and click off. No click, continuous click, or weak click all flag relay issues.

Wiggle test — with the symptom area accessible, gently wiggle the TIPM connectors and harness while monitoring electrical behavior. Intermittent issues sometimes appear under stress.

Try to reproduce the symptom in the shop. When we can reproduce it, we can confirm. When we can’t, we may ask the customer to bring the truck back when the symptom is actively happening.

Process of elimination for non-TIPM causes — battery condition, alternator function, ground connections, accessory wiring. We rule out the simpler causes before committing to a TIPM repair.
When the diagnostic confirms TIPM failure, the conversation shifts to repair options.
What the repair looks like
Three repair paths, in order of scope:
Option 1: OEM TIPM replacement from Dodge/Mopar. New TIPM ordered from Mopar, programmed to your truck’s VIN, installed. most involved option but comes with manufacturer warranty. Programming has to happen at the dealer or with a shop that has the proper equipment — we have it in-house. Recommended when long-term reliability is the priority and long-term reliability is the priority.
Option 2: Aftermarket TIPM replacement. Available from a few specialty rebuilders. smaller-scope than OEM, with quality varying by source. Some aftermarket TIPMs are essentially refurbished OEM units; others are remanufactured. We work with rebuilders we trust.
Option 3: Send original TIPM out for rebuild. The simplest option. Your existing TIPM is removed, sent to a specialty rebuilder for inspection and repair (typically replacement of failed relays, re-soldering of weak joints, and connector cleaning), then reinstalled. Quality of rebuild varies — some rebuilders do excellent work, others don’t. We have rebuilders we work with regularly.
Bonus option for fuel-pump-relay-only failures: bypass kit. If diagnosis shows the only TIPM symptom is the fuel pump relay (no-start or fuel pump running with key off), aftermarket bypass kits route the fuel pump power through an external relay outside the TIPM. Resolves the no-start issue specifically without replacing the entire TIPM. Reasonable approach for trucks with isolated fuel pump relay failure.
