47RFE transmission failure is one of the most common big-ticket repairs we see on 2003-2007 Dodge Ram Cummins trucks (the 4-speed automatic with alt-second-gear shift logic, behind the standard-output 5.9L). Here's what fails and why we recommend Revmax for the replacement.
What this issue is
The 47RFE is the heavy-duty 4-speed automatic transmission Dodge used behind the standard-output 5.9L Cummins from 2003 through 2007. (It uses an alternate-second-gear shift logic, which is why it’s sometimes described colloquially as a 5-speed, but mechanically it’s a 4-speed in Chrysler’s RFE family — the true 5-speed in this family is the 545RFE used behind Hemi V8s.) It’s the transmission you have if you have a 2003-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 with the standard-output Cummins and an automatic. Transmission failure on these trucks is one of the most common big-ticket repairs we see, particularly on trucks that have done significant towing or that haven’t kept up with the recommended fluid and filter service intervals. When a 47RFE goes, the failure cascade is usually quick — once shift quality starts deteriorating, the rest of the transmission wears faster because of the marginal operating conditions.

Symptoms you’ll notice
Failure rarely happens all at once. The pattern is typically progressive over weeks or months:
- Won’t go into gear correctly — hesitation when shifting from park to drive or reverse, or a noticeable delay before engagement
- Coming in and out of gears at unexpected times — especially under light throttle, the transmission may shift up, then back down, then up again unpredictably
- Skipping gears in the shift sequence — going from 2nd directly to 4th, missing 3rd; or downshifting through gears erratically
- RPM spike before engaging into gear — the engine revs up momentarily, then the transmission grabs and engages with a clunk. This is a classic sign of a slipping clutch pack or a delayed valve body response
- Slipping under load — towing or hill climbing reveals the slippage even when normal driving feels OK
- Harsh or delayed shifts — shifts that should be smooth become hard and abrupt, or take noticeably longer to complete
- Limp mode — the TCM may put the transmission into a “safe mode” that locks it into 2nd or 3rd gear only to prevent further damage
By the time you’re seeing two or three of these symptoms together, the rebuild is typically not far away.
Why it happens
Several contributing factors stack on this transmission:
1. Operating margins are thin for hard-use applications. The 47RFE was designed for the standard-output 5.9L Cummins (235-325 HP depending on year and application). Owners who tow heavy fifth-wheels, do commercial hauling, or run performance tunes often exceed the transmission’s design envelope. Repeated operation past design margins accelerates wear on every internal component.
2. Valve body and solenoid pack wear. These are the precision hydraulic and electronic components that control gear selection and shift timing. They’re sensitive to fluid contamination, heat cycling, and electrical degradation. When the valve body or solenoid pack starts to drift, shift quality suffers — and the resulting rough shifts accelerate wear on clutch packs and other internal components.
3. Skipped service intervals. Transmission fluid breaks down with heat and use. Mopar’s recommended interval for severe-duty/towing service is approximately every 30,000 miles; light-duty can stretch to 60,000 miles. A truck that’s gone 100,000+ miles without a service has fluid that’s no longer providing the friction and cooling characteristics the transmission needs. Wear accelerates substantially.
4. Torque converter shudder and lockup issues. The torque converter clutch on the 47RFE is a known wear point. When it starts to shudder during lockup, the vibration both feels bad and accelerates wear on related components.
How we diagnose it
When a customer brings in a 47RFE-equipped truck with shift complaints:

Pull stored transmission codes. P-codes related to solenoid performance, gear ratio errors, or torque converter clutch behavior tell us where to focus.

Check transmission fluid level and condition. Fluid level out of spec, burnt smell, or dark/contaminated appearance all narrow down the diagnostic. Burnt fluid often means clutch material has been shed into the fluid — a sign of internal wear.

Pan drop and inspection. When fluid condition is suspect or shift symptoms are severe, we drop the transmission pan to inspect for clutch material, metal particles, or other debris. Significant debris in the pan indicates internal failure progression.

Live data scan during a road test. With a scan tool monitoring transmission temperature, gear position, line pressure, and torque converter slip, we can identify shift quality issues that aren’t visible from outside. Patterns in the data tell us whether the issue is solenoid-side, clutch-side, or something else.

Pressure test. A direct line pressure test verifies whether the transmission’s hydraulic system is producing target pressures across the operating range.

Partial repair — when the diagnostic finds a discrete issue (failed solenoid pack, valve body wear, torque converter shudder) on an otherwise-healthy transmission, we can do a targeted fix. Pull the transmission, replace the affected component, refresh fluid and filter, reinstall.
Full rebuild — when teardown reveals significant internal wear (clutch packs, planetary gear damage, drum or shaft wear), the right path is full rebuild or replacement with a Revmax unit. Doing partial work on a transmission with widespread wear means going back in within months.
