What this issue is

The 68RFE is the 6-speed automatic transmission Dodge/Ram has used behind the 6.7L Cummins from model year 2007.5 onward. It’s the standard automatic in the 6.7L Cummins-equipped Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks (the cab-and-chassis 4500/5500 trucks got the heavier-duty Aisin instead — AS68RC from 2007.5-2012, then AS69RC from 2013 onward, with the AS69RC also extended to the 3500 cab-and-chassis).

The 68RFE has earned a reputation in the diesel community for problems — particularly torque converter clutch shudder, OD (overdrive) clutch failure, and valve body wear. Many of these trucks are working trucks that see real towing and hauling duty, which pushes the transmission near its design margins. When it fails, the failure cascade is usually quick once it starts.

Our standard recommendation when a 68RFE needs replacement is a Revmax Transmission, typically a built unit rather than the standard build, given the load these trucks usually see. The 2-year unlimited mileage Revmax warranty is the best part of going that route.

Symptoms you’ll notice

  • Torque converter shudder — by far the most common 68RFE complaint. At highway speeds (typically 45-65 MPH range when the TCC tries to engage), you feel a vibration or shudder. Mild at first, progressively worse over time
  • Slipping in OD (overdrive) under load — when towing or climbing grades in 6th gear, the transmission slips and the engine RPM climbs without speed gain. The OD clutch is a known weak point
  • Won’t go into gear correctly — hesitation or delayed engagement from park to drive or reverse
  • RPM spike before engaging into gear — engine revs up momentarily, then transmission grabs and engages with a clunk
  • Skipping gears in the shift sequence — unpredictable shift patterns, especially under light throttle
  • Harsh or delayed shifts — shifts that should be smooth become abrupt; shifts that should be quick become slow
  • Limp mode — the TCM locks the transmission into 2nd or 3rd gear only to prevent further damage
  • Burnt smell from transmission fluid — strong, distinct smell when checking the dipstick. Indicates clutch material in the fluid

The shudder is usually the first noticeable symptom. By the time the truck is in limp mode, the failure is well advanced.

Why it happens

Three primary failure pathways:

1. Torque converter clutch wear. The TCC on the 68RFE sees a lot of work — engaging and disengaging continuously during highway driving to manage fuel economy. Over time, the clutch friction material wears, lockup quality degrades (causing the characteristic shudder), and eventually the TCC can fail entirely. When the TCC fails, the contaminated fluid accelerates wear on the rest of the transmission.

2. Overdrive (OD) clutch failure. The OD clutch is engaged whenever the truck is in 6th gear, which is most of the time at highway speeds. Sustained load (towing, hauling) on a marginal OD clutch leads to slippage, which generates heat, which accelerates wear, which leads to more slippage. The OD clutch is one of the most commonly failed internals on this transmission.

3. Valve body wear and solenoid pack issues. The valve body is the precision hydraulic control unit that manages shift timing and pressure. Wear or contamination causes shift quality to degrade — rough shifts, delayed engagement, unpredictable behavior. Once shift quality starts to suffer, the harsh shifts accelerate wear on clutch packs throughout the transmission.

4. Operating margin issues under towing load. The 68RFE was designed for the 6.7L Cummins’s output, but real-world towing puts the transmission near its design envelope continuously. Trucks that tow regularly see the transmission’s failure modes earlier than trucks used for daily driving only.

How we diagnose it

Sequence we use:

  1. Pull stored transmission codes — solenoid codes, TCC slip codes, gear ratio errors, OD-related codes all narrow down where to look.

  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition. Burnt smell, dark color, or visible contamination indicate internal wear. Fluid in good condition narrows the diagnostic toward solenoid or TCM-side issues.

  3. Live data scan during a road test. Monitor TCC slip, line pressure, gear position, and transmission temperature during normal driving and during deliberate TCC engagement. The slip data tells us specifically what the torque converter is doing during lockup.

  4. Pan drop if symptoms or fluid condition warrant. Inspect for clutch material, metal debris, or other contamination. Significant debris means internal failure is in progress.

  5. Pressure test. Direct line pressure measurement verifies hydraulic system function across the operating range.

By the end of this sequence, we know whether you’re looking at a torque converter and fluid service (best case), a valve body rebuild, a full rebuild, or a Revmax replacement.

What the repair looks like

Repair scope ranges:

Torque converter and fluid service — when shudder is the primary complaint and the rest of the transmission still tests healthy. Pull the transmission, replace the torque converter (we use built/billet TC for these for durability), refresh fluid and filter, reinstall. Catches the issue early before downstream wear accelerates.

Valve body rebuild or replacement — when the valve body is the identified wear point. Sometimes can be done without pulling the entire transmission, depending on access.

Full rebuild or Revmax replacement — when teardown reveals widespread internal wear (OD clutch, multiple clutch packs, planetary gear damage). For most 68RFE customers, the Revmax replacement is the better path because it includes upgraded internals for the application and comes with the 2-year warranty.

Built Revmax replacement — our typical recommendation for the 68RFE. Includes billet torque converter, built valve body, deep pan, and additional cooler. Significantly more durable than the standard build under towing or hauling use.

Aisin swap (AS68RC or AS69RC) — for owners going commercial-duty or wanting the ultimate durability upgrade. Real project (transmission, TCM, harness, crossmember work, calibration by a trusted tuning partner — we don’t tune in-house) — not for the casual approach. The shudder happens because the torque converter clutch material is wearing or because the valve body isn't applying the lockup pressure smoothly. Catching it early (when shudder is mild) lets us do a torque converter and fluid service that may extend the life. Letting it progress means the clutch material breaks down further, contaminates the fluid, and accelerates wear on everything downstream.

What about the Aisin swap I've heard about? +

The Aisin is the heavy-duty 6-speed Ram has used in the cab-and-chassis 4500/5500 platform since 2007.5 (originally as the AS68RC), with the AS69RC replacing it in 2013 and extending to the 3500 cab-and-chassis. Some 68RFE owners have done the swap as the ultimate durability upgrade. It's a real option and we can have the conversation if you're interested, but it's a big project — the swap requires the Aisin transmission, transmission control module, harness, crossmember work, and calibration work handled by a trusted tuning partner (we don't tune in-house). For most owners, a built Revmax 68RFE is the better durability ratio. The Aisin swap makes more sense for trucks that are going to see commercial-duty hauling.

How long does the rebuild take? +
