What this issue is
P1093 on the 6.0L Power Stroke is a Ford-specific code for injection control pressure low during cranking — a condition where the high-pressure oil system can’t build the pressure the HEUI injectors need to fire at startup. The symptom is hard-start or no-start. The root cause is somewhere in the high-pressure oil system (HPOP, IPR, ICP, STC fitting, oil condition) or its feedback loop.
This isn’t a fuel supply code despite the “fuel system pressure” in its description — the 6.0L uses an HEUI fuel system where fuel injector operation depends on high-pressure oil. When that oil-side pressure is low, fuel can’t be delivered to the cylinders correctly.

Symptoms you’ll notice
- Check Engine Light with P1093 — often paired with P2291 (injection control pressure too low — engine cranking) or other ICP-related codes
- Extended cranking before the engine fires — the most common symptom; takes 10-20 seconds or longer instead of normal 2-3 seconds
- Hard cold-start or hard hot-start patterns — temperature-dependent behavior narrows the diagnostic
- No-start events, sometimes intermittent — P1093 often progresses from hard-start to occasional no-start to consistent no-start
- Rough running or stumble during start and in the first seconds of operation
- Loss of power under load in advanced cases — when the system can’t build commanded pressure even during operation, not just cranking
- Temperature-sensitive behavior — worse when cold, worse when hot, or worse at a specific temperature range all point at different root causes
- Oil system symptoms alongside — STC fitting area leaks, visible oil loss, or oil consumption can be the underlying cause driving P1093
Most owners first notice the hard-start pattern. By the time it’s a confirmed no-start, the code is often already set.
Why it happens
1. Oil level or condition issues. The simplest and most common root cause to check. Low oil level, or oil that’s fuel-diluted from stuck injectors or prior issues, can’t support HPOP pressure. This is always the first check.
2. IPR valve failure. The Injection Pressure Regulator that modulates HPOP output can stick, fail, or respond slowly to ECM commands. See our 6.0L IPR Failure article.
3. STC fitting leak. The Snap-To-Connect fitting between the HPOP output and the branch tubes is a known 6.0L failure point. A failed fitting dumps high-pressure oil before it reaches the injectors, producing P1093 even when the pump itself is healthy.
4. ICP sensor failure. The Injection Control Pressure sensor that reads system pressure back to the ECM can fail or drift out of spec. See our 6.0L ICP Failure article.
5. HPOP wear or failure. The pump itself can wear and lose the ability to build commanded pressure. See our 6.0L HPOP Failure article.
6. Branch tube or high-pressure oil line leaks. Less common, but O-rings and fittings in the high-pressure oil plumbing can leak and produce the same symptom pattern.
7. Battery and charging issues. Marginal batteries under-voltage during cranking, which starves the FICM and affects injector operation timing. Sometimes this looks like P1093 when the real issue is electrical.
8. Fuel supply issues. Occasional misdirection — bad fuel supply can produce symptoms that get mixed with P1093 diagnostics. A full diagnostic covers both sides.
How we diagnose it
Sequence:

Check oil level and condition. Quick and easy. Low or contaminated oil addressed first before any parts work.

Pull all stored codes. P1093 alone is one picture. P1093 with P2291 or other ICP codes sharpens the diagnostic. P1093 with FICM or fuel codes points at a different root cause.

Live data during cranking. The key diagnostic step. Watch ICP pressure, IPR command and response, FICM voltage, and cranking data simultaneously. Patterns distinguish IPR issues from pump issues from sensor issues.

STC fitting inspection. Physical check for oil leakage at the STC fitting area. A leaking STC is often visible.

IPR and ICP testing. Actuation tests and response monitoring for each component.

HPOP performance test. If upstream checks pass, verify the pump itself is building and holding target pressure.

Battery and electrical check. Both batteries independently, FICM voltage, wiring to key components.

Oil and fuel analysis if needed. For cases where contamination is suspected, lab analysis of oil and fuel samples confirms or eliminates that path.

What the repair looks like
Scope depends on what diagnostic identifies.
Oil change with fresh quality oil and filter. If low or contaminated oil is the root cause, this is the full repair. Also recommend addressing whatever caused the oil to be contaminated.
STC fitting replacement. Factory STC upgraded to a billet-style fitting. Moderate scope.
