LLY Duramax — P2149 (Injector Positive Voltage Relay Circuit, Group 2)

P2149 on the LLY Duramax is an injector wiring fault — Group 2 cylinders 2, 3, 5, and 8. Often a connector repair, sometimes a full harness. Here's how we find the difference.

What this issue is

P2149 on the LLY Duramax is an injector control circuit fault — specifically on the Group 2 circuit, which energizes cylinders 2, 3, 5, and 8. When the FICM (Fuel Injector Control Module) detects that it can’t properly complete the ground circuit for one or more of those injectors, it sets P2149 and disables the entire group to protect the engine.

The LLY’s sibling code, P1246, is the same fault on Group 1 (cylinders 1, 4, 6, and 7). Diagnostic approach is identical; only the cylinders involved change.

What makes this code frustrating — for both the owner and the diagnostician — is that the fault is almost never the injector itself. It’s upstream, in the wiring between the FICM and the injector. And wiring faults are the hardest kind to catch, because they often only misbehave under specific conditions (vibration, temperature, humidity) and clear themselves as soon as the conditions change.

Symptoms you’ll notice

The code presents with some or all of:

  • Check Engine Light with P2149 (and/or P1246 for Group 1)
  • Partner codes identifying the specific cylinder — P0202 (cyl 2), P0203 (cyl 3), P0205 (cyl 5), P0208 (cyl 8). If multiple cylinders are involved, multiple codes set
  • Reduced Engine Power warning — the truck enters limp mode once the group is disabled
  • Rough idle or shaking — running on four cylinders instead of eight is immediately obvious
  • Stalling or hesitation if the fault comes and goes rapidly
  • Loss of power under acceleration — obviously, with half the injectors offline

The intermittent nature is the defining symptom. Owners often describe the truck as “it runs fine most of the time but every few weeks it throws this code and limp-modes on me.”

Why it happens

Three root causes, in order of frequency:

1. Worn injector connector. Each injector has a two-pin connector that plugs into the engine harness. Those connectors see heat, vibration, and oil over years of service. The female pins inside the connector spread and lose tension, or the locking tab breaks and the connector starts backing out slightly. Either way, the contact becomes intermittent. This is the most common cause and the simplest fix. GM issued several service bulletins for connector replacement specifically.

2. Chafed wire in the injector harness. The engine harness routes past sharp edges inside the valley under the valve cover. If the loom wears through, individual wires can rub against the intake manifold or a bracket. A chafed wire can short to ground or break completely — both of which set P2149. This is harder to find because the damage is usually hidden inside the harness wrap.

3. FICM itself. Rare on the LLY (more common on the 6.0L Power Stroke), but a failing FICM can produce phantom injector control faults. We only suspect the FICM after both connector and harness are ruled clean.

A fourth edge case: the FICM mounting. If the FICM isn’t bolted down to its bracket tightly, or if the connectors at the FICM aren’t fully seated, you can see circuit faults that mimic injector wiring issues. Five-minute check, worth doing first.

How we diagnose it

Our sequence:

  1. Confirm FICM mounting — two bolts, both connectors seated and locked. If something’s loose, we cycle the truck and see if the code comes back.

  2. Pull the valve cover(s) covering the reported cylinders. Duramax cylinder layout is driver-side 1/3/5/7, passenger-side 2/4/6/8 — so Group 2 (cylinders 2, 3, 5, 8) spans both banks: cylinders 2 and 8 on the passenger side, cylinders 3 and 5 on the driver side. Depending on which partner code set with P2149, we may only need one valve cover off; a full harness inspection means both come off. Visual check of each injector connector — oil intrusion, broken tabs, pulled-out pins.

  3. Resistance check on each Group 2 injector circuit with the harness disconnected at the FICM. We measure resistance from the FICM connector to each injector terminal, looking for a value out of spec or wildly different between the four cylinders.

  4. Wiggle test under live data. Scan tool in record mode, truck idling, and we physically manipulate the harness at suspected chafe points (where it crosses brackets, where it enters the loom, where it transitions from the head to the valley). If the code sets during the wiggle, we’ve found the section with the fault.

  5. Continuity and short-to-ground test if the wiggle test doesn’t produce a fault. We unwrap the harness section-by-section, inspecting visually and testing each wire for continuity and for shorts to ground. This is slow work — sometimes two hours of careful unwrap to find a single bare spot against an intake bolt.

When the fault is in a connector, we’ve usually found it within an hour. When it’s a chafed wire, it can take a full half-day.

What the repair looks like

Depending on where the fault lives:

Connector-level repair — the GM harness upgrade kit (TSB-referenced, typically includes the problem #2 and #7 connectors and related pigtails) is the standard starting fix. We install it, solder and heat-shrink the splices (not crimp), and re-wrap. Verify with a drive cycle. Usually the lowest-scope option.

Chafed wire in the harness — if the damage is localized, we repair the affected wire with a proper splice and reroute the harness away from the chafe point. Mid-scope, depending on time to locate.

Full harness replacement — when damage is widespread or the harness is old enough that new chafe points are likely, we replace the whole injector harness with a new OEM GM part. Eliminates the failure mode entirely. The most thorough option.

Every repair in this category gets a post-repair drive cycle (ideally including rough road and temperature variation) to validate the fix before we call it done.

Can I keep driving with P2149 showing? +

You can, but you shouldn't. When the code sets, the truck disables the entire Group 2 injector bank — so four cylinders stop firing and the truck is running on four. That puts extra load on the four working cylinders and drops power substantially. It won't do immediate engine damage, but you're not doing the truck any favors.
